What are The Building Blocks of Change™?
The Building Blocks of Change™ is a tool that helps people visualize and understand the interconnected elements of community and economic development and guides them through the process of creating community change. This model is grounded in "systems thinking." The tool allows people to view their community, region or world and their organization from a broad perspective that includes structures, patterns, and events rather than just the events themselves.
The Building Blocks of Change™ framework is a four-tiered system. This system consists of
- Areas of impact and forces in the community;
- Areas of impact and forces within individuals and organizations; and
- The processes involved in creating community change and the capabilities required, both creative and technical.
Ken Hubbell and Associates has developed two unique models to represent these interrelated elements:
- A two-dimensional mandala with tiers radiating out from "The Inner Dimension of Leadership" sphere, which is at the center of community change
- A three-dimensional set of colorful cubes corresponding to each of the four tiers: Guiding Community Systems, The Inner Dimension of Leadership, Creative Competencies and Technical Competencies
How can I use The Building Blocks of Change™?
The Building Blocks of Change can be used for several purposes, in a number of contexts such as:
- In workshops and short retreats to inspire "big-picture thinking" about an organization's current and potential impact on its audience and to guide decisions about future actions
- In long-term engagements, to frame regional planning and community development processes
- To serve as a comprehensive "checklist" for program and organizational performance evaluation
- To organize master plans and annual reports
Who uses The Building Blocks of Change™?
Nonprofit organizations, socially-responsible for-profit organizations, foundations and coalitions that want to affect positive social or economic change in communities. The Building Blocks of Change™ is also used in leadership development programs.
