Ken Hubbell & Associates (KHA) develops opportunities for people and communities. We provide consulting services including research, facilitation, strategic planning, design and project development for a diverse client base that includes city governments, state agencies, private foundations, nonprofit organizations, and for-profit businesses. Aristotle, Little Rock, AR

  • KHA partnered with this innovative interactive firm on a wide range of projects that included the online, print and digital communications for the W. K. Kellogg Foundation's Lifting Up the Delta initiative. Also collaborated on an extensive oral and video history project for the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center that culminated in an educational interactive DVD, "Voices: A Century of Little Rock's African American Community."

Arkansas Center for Health Improvement, Little Rock, AR

  • Facilitated strategic business analysis and scenario framework to create a five-year Operating Plan. Developed graphic diagrams for the organization's original Theory of Change, Business Idea, and generated strategic and resource development options.

Arkansas Coalition for Excellence, Little Rock, AR

  • Designed and delivered training and technical assistance to 20 nonprofit groups and public agencies in the southwest region of Arkansas.

Arkansas Coalition of Housing & Neighborhood Growth for Empowerment (ACHANGE)

  • Designed and facilitated short strategic action planning process with 20-member board that included several central LR nonprofits and state agency representatives to focus affordable housing development and policy outreach for this statewide coalition.

Arkansas Disability Rights Center, Little Rock, AR

  • Facilitated staff focus groups and board strategic planning process that synthesized new challenges and opportunities to accelerate support for Arkansans with disabilities and generated a set of five main priorities for program strategies from 2010-13.

Arkansas Economic Development Commission/Arkansas Development Finance Authority

  • Conducted public meetings and developed 5-year Consolidated Plan covering Community Development Block Grant priorities for the state's HUD funds. Collaborated on a subsequent report: Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice.

Arkansas Governor's Office: Consultant for 1994 Empowerment Zones initiative, Little Rock, AR

  • Coordinated resource information to applicant network in state's distressed communities; developed a 10-year strategy targeting state agency programs and foundation initiatives to support community-driven strategies in persistently poor counties.

Arkansas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Little Rock, AR

  • Developed and implemented a feasibility study to identify the goals, markets, and members for a new central Arkansas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Initial study was supported by a grant from the AT&T foundation.

Arkansas Immunization Coalition, Little Rock, AR

  • Facilitated work sessions to shape the mission, core focus, and initial structure of this multi-stakeholder coalition.

Arkansas Public Policy Panel, Little Rock

  • Coordinating a group learning effort to chart the essential organizational achievements for this 40-year old grassroots coalition and shape a set of strategic messages to communicate the priorities and successes to key partners and constituencies.

Arkansas Rural Electric Cooperatives, Little Rock, AR

  • Helped the AECI team and their partners - Rural School and Community Trust - plan, design, and facilitate a day-long forum for educators and state legislators.

Arkansas State Police Museum

  • Helped the Museum's planning board introduce the museum's mission and solicit historical materials and financial resources for the establishment of an Arkansas State Police Museum through printed communication materials designed and produced by our firm.

Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Eagle Butte, SD

  • KHA provided executive coaching and strategic planning for the tribe's Ventures team as part of a ten year poverty reduction initiative on the reservation that is supported by the Northwest Area Foundation and others.

City of Helena, AR

  • Prepared projects and funding proposals for flood control, downtown revitalization, and pedestrian/bike corridors; researched land use and zoning options; managed flood and downtown improvement construction projects.

Clinton School of Public Service-Center on Community Philanthropy

  • Designing and facilitating a community coaching network to assist small rural towns reshape solutions to chronic poverty in Arkansas. Initiative will work with local grassroots coalitions, elected officials and will provide graduate students at the University of Arkansas Clinton School field learning in activating community change.

    In 2008, KHA designed and facilitated a campaign to address the impact of foreclosures on the state's communities. It included research and production of a documentary video, hosting planning conferences, and synthesizing a consensus action strategy.

Coahoma Community College, Clarksdale, MS

  • Facilitated a scenario planning process for Coahoma Community College to help 30 administrators envision and plan the college's strategic responses to four different-but all possible-"futures" in the region.

Colorado Trust, Denver, CO

  • Designed and facilitated strategic planning and scenario development about the future of health care in Colorado and the leverage points for funders to accelerate health care and reshape public policy.

Delta Cultural Center, Helena, AR

  • KHA is working with the staff and Advisory Council on a series of strategic learning retreats to identify new opportunities and to connect the team around a new shared vision.

  • Previously, KHA researched the history and impact of Arkansas' folk life programs and prepared recommendations to revive program through new networks between state agencies and universities.

Delta State University, Cleveland, MS

  • Co-facilitated a Delta "listening team" visit for the McKnight Foundation on environmental challenges in the Delta; produced diagrams and researched historical writing on the environment since 1800.

Department of Arkansas Heritage, Little Rock, AR

  • Facilitated a strategic planning process with department leaders and directors from seven agencies that generated a roadmap to guide culture and heritage in Arkansas from 2008-2012. The highly participatory process incorporated learning circles, scenario thinking and forums for nearly 25 allies to anticipate futures for the state's heritage sector, and systems mapping to identify key leverage points for change.

    KHA also worked with all seven agencies on the first steps in improving staff relationships through a short series of learning retreats.

Foundation for the Mid South, Jackson, MS

  • Facilitated a staff learning effort to document the critical organizational traditions, milestones and long-term vision, and to refine the core foundation strategy and theory of change; coached the staff to adapt results based accountability into annual work plans.

    Over the last two decades of strategic work with the foundation, KHA coached community volunteers engaged in the Workforce Alliance effort to produce regional collaborative plans in Delta counties of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi; guided interpretation of forces and trends driving opportunities for current workers and people out of labor force. Led research and planning on federal Empowerment Zone demonstration project.

Goodwill Industries of North Central Wisconsin, Menasha, WI

  • Developing a board engagement strategy to reinvigorate the connections and contributions from board members to the long-term vitality and sustainability of this progressive human service agency that serves over 40,000 people annually. This effort was in collaboration with Gary Hubbell Consulting

Grantmakers for Children, Youth & Families, Silver Spring, MD

  • Designed and facilitated strategic thinking and planning sessions with the board of this large, national network of foundations.

Greater Alexandria Economic Development Authority, Alexandria, LA

  • Facilitated a real time graphic mapping project and strategic discussion of the economic development system in Alexandria, LA. This led to a set of strategic priorities for a newly formed local taxing commission.

Grenada, Mississippi Governments

  • Facilitated joint strategic plannings retreated for key elected leaders in this northwest Mississippi county designed to generate new consensus on community development priorities and collective action agendas.

Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

  • Designed a leadership development initiative and provided coaching to the CEO to improve innovation and resilience in the organization so it can accelerate the levels of health and well-being in the southern Ontario region.

Helena Community Renewal Corporation, Helena, AR

  • Provided planning, organizational development, board training, and affordable housing development assistance for nonprofit housing organization in the Arkansas Delta.

Hitachi Foundation, Washington, DC

  • Developed a communications systems analysis and designed strategies for using the web to streamline grant proposal reviews and to expand online content about corporate responsibility

Housing Assistance Council, Washington, DC

  • In 2001, participated in a research team that produced "policy scan" and policy targets to improve affordable housing in the Mississippi Delta. Developed content and designed web site for collaborative network of nonprofit organizations and agencies in the Mid South in 2000. As a complement, we guided the technical assistance assessment and technology training for an emerging network of grassroots community development corporations.

Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS

  • Provided learning workshops, webinars, and support to a network of community coaches on the essential principles and practices for coaching diverse stakeholder groups to improve health and economic conditions in seven Midwestern states.

Little Rock Housing Authority

  • Developed a HUD Hope VI $130 million community revitalization application that included mixed income housing, community opportunity, and small business, youth enrichment, job training, health and family computing support centers near the Clinton Presidential Library.

    Facilitated neighborhood revitalization planning process in 2011 for histroci inner-city district adjoining the state fairgrounds that assisted residents to produce a 20-year vision and redevelopment plan for the Sunset Community. This exemplary process catalyzed a federal Choice Neighborhoods designation from HUD, which is supporting an expanded community development effort in Little Rock's oldest neighborhood.

Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Arkadelphia, AR; Greenville, MS; and New York, New York

  • Guided strategic planning with staff and boards of two community development corporations (CDCs) in the Arkansas Delta, one experienced organization that was moving into business development and training and one brand new CDC interested in housing development.

  • In 2003 KHA also outlined a training and capacity-building experience that will help participating community development corporations develop a community impact evaluation process tailored to their community context. This learning module will support improvement in the practice of Community Connections and Fund Development strategies for its local affiliates.

  • Provided continuous strategic consulting and planning services with staff and advisory team members of this regional community improvement organization. In 2005 and 2006, we facilitated summer strategic planning retreats that began to incorporate deeper trend and forces analysis into the strategic process and we generated a basic scenario “logic diagram” that framed four possible approaches to strategies. As a result, KHA designed a strategic planning toolkit for Community Development Corporations and a learning program on measuring the impact on rural communities of affordable housing.

Marquis Companies (private long-term health care and assisted living provider), Milwaukie, OR

  • Partnered with Gary Hubbell Consulting to facilitate a long-term organization strategy-building process. Designed and facilitated interactive scenario learning process involving core leaders and network partners that generated four futures for elder hood in 2030 and the likely implications for the long-term care industry, which served as context for developing a set of robust action strategies at Marquis to shape advantage and anticipate risks for the company in the next decade.

Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, Winston-Salem, NC

  • Participated in regional design team from rural development sector to help shape the grassroots leadership programming for the Foundation's work across the southeast. Facilitated regional site visits for the Board.

MDC, Inc., Chapel Hill, NC

  • Ken Hubbell and Associates has worked extensively since 1993 with MDC, a nonprofit organization that develops regional education, workforce and economic development initiatives.

    • Latino Student Success Initiative
      KHA helped design a comprehensive coalition strategic planning process focused on reshaping pathways and pipelines for Latino student post-secondary and workplace success. Hubbell provided coaching to two Texas coalitions in San Antonio and Uvalde as well as mentoring for a group of 10 other community coaches.

    • Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count
      This multi-year initiative, funded by the Lumina Foundation for Education, addresses a national imperative: increasing the success of students at community colleges, especially low-income students and students of color. For this initiative, Ken Hubbell and Associates is training coaches and data facilitators who will assist demonstration sites as they plan and implement policies and practices that support student success at community colleges. Our firm also helped MDC conceptualize the role of these coaches and continues to engage coaches in reflective practice.

    • Rural Community Colleges Initiative
      Ken Hubbell and Associates assisted rural community colleges in the Southern United States and in Appalachia that were engaged in a national Ford Foundation project. Our principal activity was field coaching for teams developing long-term plans and strategies for increasing access to education for lower-income people and for expanding economic development in distressed communities. We coached four community coalitions and helped design and facilitate learning institutes and workshops.

    • University of Namibia
      Collaborated on a regional initiative in Namibia, Southern Africa by helping the University of Namibia create and implement a regional development plan built around expanded access to public education, micro-small business support, heritage and artisan market development and collaborative leadership. Ken Hubbell and Associates helped conduct training workshops and events in Namibia and site visits to exemplary projects in the US, and we continue serving as coaches and technical advisors to the Northern Campus of the University of Namibia. Most recently, we guided the University of Namibia staff through a scenario-based strategic planning process for northern Namibia and the northern campus of the university.

    • Rural Carolinas
      Facilitated a strategic review for the Rural Carolinas program, funded by the Duke Endowment.
    • FEMA-Emergency Preparedness Demonstration Program
      Collaborated with staff on a framework for levels of community capacity in engaging low income citizens in community disaster response plans.

    • Ft. Worth Coalition for Community Change
      Collaborated on a neighborhood training initiative for the Ft. Worth Coalition for Community Change, three local coalitions in the central city that are developing leadership teams to plan and implement neighborhood renewal with support from the Burnett Foundation.

    • MDC-Internal
      For MDC, Ken Hubbell and Associates designed training materials including a three-dimensional cube that won Gold ADDY awards in southwest district Advertising Federation competition in 1998. We also edited and designed a Community Change Toolkit for practitioners.

Meridian School Education Task Force, Meridian, MS

  • Designed and facilitated the Meridian School Education Task Force's strategic planning process for Meridian's long-term school improvement initiative, and conceptualized a community and school system engagement and leadership process.

Mississippi Governor's Office of Literacy, Jackson, MS

  • Guided staff strategic planning process and developed 5-year agency plan; developed collaborative strategic planning training guide to be used by communities and agencies targeting adult learners.

Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, Little Rock, AR

  • Provided strategic planning framework and staff learning facilitation from 2007-2009 to help guide the initial staff in implementing strategy, outreach and educational programs.

    In 2003, Ken Hubbell and Associates guided a two-year oral history project centered on African American history and culture in Little Rock. We designed and collaborated with Aristotle Interactive an interactive CD, Voices, The African American Experience in Little Rock, which was distributed to over 1,000 schools in the state. The project was underwritten by grants from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.

    KHA developed the original Master Plan for the agency which opened after extensive reconstruction in 2008.

New Horizons Community Development Corporation, Fordyce, AR

  • Provided strategic planning and organizational development assistance to expand community childcare and housing initiatives sponsored by a faith-based community development corporation.

Nonprofit Resources, Inc., Little Rock

  • Ken Hubbell and Associates provided strategic planning to the board and staff and designed conferences and training workshops as well as publications. Our work beginning in 1995 and continuing for several years included developing a network among 11 collaborative teams working in distressed Arkansas counties to plan and implement comprehensive community development. For this Champion Communities model, we organized conferences, task forces, Internet sites and training. Working with Stephens, Inc. we developed a new funding method using a unique collateralized bond issue to generate operating funds for community coalitions.

Northwest Area Foundation, St. Paul, MN

  • Designed and facilitated s series of learning retreats for Native American development leaders and leaders of over 20 U.S. Foundations. We developed colorful vision murals, integrated strategy maps and summary documents intended to increase philanthropic partners in the effort and direct investment across Indian Country

  • Helped design and facilitate learning events for the Reservation Ventures initiative that supports Indian tribes in South Dakota (Cheyenne River Sioux), North Dakota (Turtle Mountain Chippewa), and Washington (Lummi) during a strategic planning process for catalyzing development on the reservations.

Old State House, Little Rock, AR

  • In 2006 and 2007 KHA facilitated a five-year strategic planning process with the Old State House. By incorporating staff surveys, trends research, the organization’s own history, and scenario development, Ken Hubbell & Associates helped the staff to create a Shared Vision, Strategic Direction, and Five Year Goals for their organization.

Opportunity Lands Corporation, Helena, AR

  • Developed property, historic buildings for affordable housing in Helena. Prepared plans and proposals for major investment from foundations and for joint venture with community housing group to build single-family homes.

Oxfam America, Boston, MA

  • Facilitated strategic planning meetings with program staff, grantees, and rural sociologists to examine ways to leverage small grants, networks and selected technical assistance for grassroots social justice projects in the Southeast.
